With cover photos, a recurring theme seems to be “sex sells”. A lot of the female models on the front tend to be wearing very little, and some could say that is to show off the tattoos which of course, seeing the tattoos would sell the magazines, but they could equally have had a male model showing off his tattoos, which they very rarely do. Many of these images are studio based, and when on location the photographer has used additional lighting to allow for the image to be flawless and still look good when manipulated post production. Also, the flash ensures that tattoos, hair, make up and costumes all look pristine when printed to a high quality on a magazine cover. I have managed to view these magazines as PDF’s on the magazine’s website, therefore the images also need to be a good enough quality to view online without being pixelated or blurred, therefore flash is an effective way of doing this, paired with perhaps a wide angle lens to allow plenty of light to get into the image when shooting.
